1st International conference on Sargassum described as a success

The organisers of the 1st International Conference on Sargassum hosted in Guadeloupe say the event was concluded successfully.

The event which took place from October 23-26, 2019 brought together stakeholders from the Caribbean and other countries of the world to discuss the issue of sargassum.

The general public is invited to watch the videos of the conferences on the Facebook pages of the Regional Council of Guadeloupe and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) in English and French.

In attendance were representatives of the OECS, the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), the Organization of American States (OAS), Barbados, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts & Nevis, Anguilla, Montserrat, British Virgin Islands, Martinique, Saint Martin, Saint Barthelemy, France, Trinidad & Tobago, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil and the USA.

The International Conference on Sargassum has resulted from the commitment and support of the President of the Regional Council of Guadeloupe Ary Chalus, and the President of France Emmanuel Macron. This conference pursued three main objectives:

  • enhancing the dissemination of knowledge about sargassum to the general public,
  • identifying the actions implemented by the authorities of the countries and territories impacted and the best strategies to address this phenomenon,
  • strengthening cooperation in this area by defining a common political strategy which involves stakeholders at the regional and international levels.
