Amidst ongoing support and cooperation from the government and people of Taiwan to sustain growth within the agriculture sector, Agriculture Minister Ezechiel Joseph says the lead exporter needs to take the business of exporting Saint Lucian bananas seriously.
According to him, efforts by his ministry to improve market share internationally for bananas, and further expand the sub-sector must be met with intent and vigour on the part of the management of WINFRESH.
Mr. Joseph said export figures are not reflective of banana production in St. Lucia. He said government is disappointed that efforts to increase exports are being stymied by WINFRESH.
The Agriculture Minister says it is time to address the bottleneck. He believes WINFRESH is not giving the type of support that ‘they can give’.
Mr. Joseph warned WINFRESH that government is not going to sit back and ‘allow them to stifle our efforts as it pertains to exporting our bananas to the UK’.
He said if the leadership of WINFRESH is not in a position to give support to gov’t initiatives and programmes for the banana industry ‘they will have to step out and allow persons who have the willpower and the energy to give that support’.
