A series of workshops aimed at improving banana production has taken place here through the assistance of the Taiwan Technical Mission.
The workshops were held in collaboration with Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Physical Planning, Natural Resources and Co-operatives..
The “Banana Plants Preparation and Follower Setting” workshops took place in Deglos, La Caye, Grace, Roseau, Woodland and Micoud on 11th, 18th, 25th of April and 2nd, 9th, 16th of May, 2019.
Agricultural specialist from Taiwan Technical Mission introduced Saint Lucian farmers techniques of the cultivation and management of tissue culture plantlet.
They also explained the pros and cons of tissue culture plantlets and suckers.
Farmers explored a new cultivation model of banana which would help farmers with production schedules that avoid hurricane seasons.
Also present at these workshops were Project Extension staff of the Banana Productivity Improvement Project (BPIP). In total there were 8 workshops, 320 farmers and Saint Lucian officers attended the events.
