The Taiwan Technical Mission in St. Lucia is now collaborating with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) to assist farmers in a compost making activity by using waste mushroom media and empty cocoa shells to increase the productivity of local cocoa plantations.
Chief of The Taiwan Technical Mission, Mr. Mario Cheng together with his Production Specialist Mr. Eric Chen and IICA’s National Specialist Brent Theophile, travelled to two areas of the country for site visits to two farmer holdings.
The aim of these visits was to facilitate the requests of two local farmers desirous of collaborating with each other and who hope to connect two composting activities in the North and south of the island. These site visits were done on June 22nd to Fond Assau, Babonneau and Beausoleil in Choiseul.
The first visit was to Fond Assau to a local farmer, Mr. Alexis William, owner of Funky Fungi Mushrooms.
The next visit was to Mr. Cuthbert Monroqc’s farm. He is one of the founding members of the Beausoliel Sustainable Agri-business group and owns a 12-acre cocoa farm himself.
After he harvests the cocoa beans, he intends to use the cocoa shells on his farm to make compost.
